School Board Regular Meeting Minutes
November 15, 2022
The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, November 15th, 2022 at 6:00 pm in Science Room #50.
Members present in person: Adkins, Weidemann, Tollefsrud, Wilder, Miller, Marquardt, Livingood, Superintendent Kuphal, Student Representative Matthew McClimon, Student Representative Anna Wheat
Members present via visible-audible technology: Wilder
Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Rich Wicks, Lana Hollar, Lori Schutte
The meeting was called to order by Chair Adkins at 6:01 pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was said.
Motion by Marquardt, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the agenda.
Motion by Miller, second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve the October 12, 2022 minutes, October 18, 2022 minutes, and November 2, 2022 minutes.
Gary introduced and welcomed Anna Wheat as a Student School Board Representative.
Consent Agenda: Motion by Weidemann, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the following, with a special thank you for all the donations:
A. 2021-22 Budget
B. Claims Report
C. Donations:
- $370 to be used for Milk/Snack Break Program from First Southeast Bank
- $6420 for new Dr. Dish Basketball Shooting Machine from Cory & Stacey Wilson
- Refreshments for Open House from Jane Hall (cookies, bars, lemonade, paper products)
- $25 to Band/Choir account from anonymous donor
D. Resignation - Laura Vatland as Girls C-Team Basketball Coach
E. Approve Winter Coaches
VII. Reports
- Student Representatives:
- The varsity volleyball team placed 3rd at State.
- 8 Choir students attended Honor Choir in Grand Meadow.
- Veterans Day Program was held today - Choir and Band did well.
- Thanksgiving break next week- Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off.
- Girls basketball starts this week. Boys basketball starts next week.
- Committees:
- World’s Best Workforce -No Report
- Curriculum Review - No Report
- Facilities and Capital Outlay - No Report
- Policy Committee - Policy review was discussed at SSC.
- COVID-19 Committee - No Report
- Hiawatha Valley Education District - It’s been a challenging year at Kellogg, kids seem to be struggling.
- Southeast Service Cooperative - No Report
- PreK-12 Principal -
- 8 FFA students attended National FFA Convention - Thank you to Mrs. Gallagher for taking them.
- Parent/Teacher conferences are tonight and Thursday night.
- Fall Sports Banquet will be held Friday at 6:00pm.
- Bluff Country Collaborative is helping us set up career navigating experiences. Thank you to Mrs. Hollar for taking students to these.
- Thank you to all who attended and supported State Volleyball last week and thank you to those who donated toward the band and fan buses.
- Superintendent -
- Paul Tollefsrud recently took a group of students to a construction event to explore careers.
- Currently working on setting up a Dream Jobs event where area businesses come talk to students to promote jobs and make them aware of what is out there.
IX. Items for Action and/or Discussion
- Motion by Weidemann, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the resolution supporting Form A application to MSHSL Foundation.
- Motion by Weidemann, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the World's Best Workforce update given by Principal Weidemann. This will be posted on the school website and the date discussed at the school board meeting will be sent to the state.
- Motion by Livingood, second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve JV Girls Basketball coaching leave of absence request for Tyler Augedahl.
- Motion by Weidemann, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve hiring up to 1.0 Special Education Paraprofessional for the Elementary School.
- Next meeting for the Strategic Planning Process is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:00 pm. Pizza and beverages will be provided.
- Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the three-year renewal (years 2 & 3) of Business Manager Contract with SMS.
- a. Motion by Miller, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the Resolution Canvassing Returns of Votes.
b. Motion by Weidemann, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the Resolution Authorizing Issuance of Certificates of Election.
