Strategic Planning Meeting

November 2, 2022

The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Media Center.

 

Members present in person: Adkins, Weidemann, Wilder, Miller, Marquardt, Livingood, Superintendent Kuphal, Student Representative Matthew McClimon

Members present via visible-audible technology: Gail Gilman

Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, and additional staff, students, and community members

Members Absent: Tollefsrud

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.  

 

Motion by Miller, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the agenda.

 

A meal was provided.  

 

Gail Gilman gave an overview of the process.  

 

Gary Kuphal gave a District update.

 

Gail gave an overview of survey results.  

 

Members broke into small groups to discuss prouds, possibilities, and must haves:

Prouds:

  • Class sizes
  • Facility advancements 
  • Student to faculty ratio
  • Amount of educational opportunities
  • Staff to student relationships
  • Communication
  • 100% graduation rate
  • Class trip (Senior) - very consistent 
  • Improved diversity - foreign exchange students
  • Athletic opportunities - dispersing if not strictly offered 
  • Embracing changes 
  • Community support 
  • Upperclassmen opportunities - PSEO, work based learning
  • Cross borders - Iowa to Minnesota
  • Teachers and long-jevity 
  • Respected teachers
  • Improved technology 
  • Longing to keep past North-Winn students
  • College week 

Possibilities:

  • Gifted/talented program
  • Trade schools - apprenticeship and/or opportunities
  • In house Spanish 
  • More foreign language 
  • Broadening online opportunities 
  • Art program opportunities 
  • Ability to hire staff to offer more programs 
  • Student teachers
  • Community service opportunities

Must Haves/ Must Address:

  • Life skills/ finance 
  • Plan to replace retired teachers - succession plan
  • Full time vs. Part time
  • Fine art opportunities 
  • Flexibility in schedules 
  • Reaching out to different schools
  • Not enough supplies/ funding 
  • Building maintenance
  • Crowded senior floor 
  • Bullying not being addressed - follow bullying policy 
  • Education, implementation addressing 
  • Trained teachers for disabilities 
  • Ability to help students learn
  • Recruiting enough subs to let the teachers take classes for development 
  • Elective consistency
