School Board Regular Meeting Minutes

May 17, 2022

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Media Center.

 

Members present in person: Adkins, Miller, Marquardt, Weidemann, Tollefsrud, Superintendent Kuphal

Others present via visible-audible technology: Livingood

Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Wanda Hanson from Fillmore County Journal, Ruth Ann Sacquitne, Sarah Holdmeyer

Members Absent: Wilder, Student Representatives Emily Carolan and Matthew McClimon

 

The meeting was called to order by Chair Adkins at 6:00 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

 

Motion by Marquardt, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the agenda as written.  

 

Motion by Miller, second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve the April 19, 2022 minutes.  

 

Consent Agenda:  Motion by Weidemann, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the following:  

  1. 2021-22 Budget
  2. Claims Report
  3. District Assessment Coordination Stipend of $2500 for Paula Snell
  4. Resignation from Laura Horihan as Drama Club Advisor 
 

Principal Report:

  • Congratulations to M-C Choir for recently receiving 5 Excellent ratings and 4 Superior ratings!
  • Congratulations to the National Honor Society students: Emiy Carolan, Emma Middendorf, Sophia Morken, Emma Tollefsrud, Fred Williams, Matt McClimon, Kelly McClimon, Jordan Larson, MaKenzie Kelly, Camryn Cox, Molly Lee, and Jaymeson Tollefrsrud.  Thank you to Lana Hollar and Jessica Hahn-Miller for all the work you put into NHS.  
  • $30,000+ was given out for senior scholarship awards last Sunday.  Thank you to all who support M-C students!  Congratulations to the recipients, and thank you to Lana Hollar for arranging this for our students!
  • Baccalaureate was held on Sunday at Mabel First Lutheran Church.  The M-C Choir sang and sounded great.  Thank you to our area churches for recognizing our seniors!
  • Good luck to the Spring teams!  There will be a pep fest this Friday morning to cheer them on as they enter end of season games.
  • Seniors’ last day will be Wednesday, May 25th.  Graduation practice will be that afternoon.  
  • Graduation will be Friday, June 3rd at 7:00 pm.
 

Superintendent Report:  

  •  Mark Weidemann and Dustin Tollefsrud will be presenting the seniors with their diplomas at graduation.  Please arrive no later than 6:45.
  • With Karl Urbaniak retiring this year, we plan to recognize him at a football game next Fall.  Will discuss further and bring back to the board.  More details to come.  
 

Enrollment was reviewed.

 

Items for Action and/or Discussion:

  1.  Motion by Weidemann, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the Cooperative Sports Agreement with Lanesboro (Track and Boys Golf) and Fillmore Central (Wrestling).  
  2. Motion by Miller, second by Dustin Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve Paul Tollefsrud as the new Head Football Coach.  
  3. Motion by Weidemann, Second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve the Dean of Students Position.       
  4. Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve a .2 FTE Teacher Increase to accommodate the Dean of Student position.         
  5. Motion by Tollefsrud, second Weidemann to approve Operating Capital request of $102,680 with a $30,622 reserve and the LTFM request of $92,100 with a $49,599 reserve.  
  6. Motion by Marquardt, second by Livingood and carried 5-0, to approve the use of ESSER funds to purchase a new security camera system for $23,237, combine servers with Lewiston Altura and purchase a new phone system for $12,000, and purchase a new gym PA system.  Jeff Oian is looking into the cost for the PA system.  Dustin abstained from this vote.  
  7. Motion by Weidemann, second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve the final draft of the 2022-23 school calendar.
  8. Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the 2023-24 school calendar.  
  9. Discussion was held on considering an updated strategic plan.  Gary will gather more information and bring back to the board.
  10. Discussion was held on the Return to School Plan.  No change was made.  No action.

  2. July 19, 2022; School Board Meeting, 6:00pm
  3. August 16, 2022; School Board Meeting, 6:00pm
