School Board Regular Meeting Minutes

April 19, 2022

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Media Center.

 

Members present in person: Miller, Marquardt, Wilder, Weidemann, Livingood, Tollefsrud, Superintendent Kuphal

Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Rich Wicks, Amy Hoscheit, Pam Rasmussen

Members Absent: Cristal Adkins, Student Representatives Emily Carolan and Matthew McClimon

 

The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Miller at 6:00 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

 

Motion by Marquardt, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the agenda as written.  

 

Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the March 15, 2022 minutes.  

 

Public Comments:  Pam Rasmussen shared with the Board that the $200 Lion’s Grant was used to purchase 152 books for students.  Thank you to the Lion’s!

 

Consent Agenda:  Motion by Wilder, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the following, with a special thank you for the donation:  

  1. 2021-22 Budget
  2. Claims Report
  3. Donations:  
  • Portable PA System donated by Mabel Fire Department
  1. Nickole Eiken Resignation 
 

Committee Reports:

Facilities and Capital Outlay Committee: looked at and prioritized the list of needed items.  Currently working on getting estimates.  Will bring back next month.  

 

The electrical gearbox is on backorder until next February.  The committee will meet next week to look at all options to see if they can get one sooner.  

Bids on the new transformer came in.  This will be discussed more next week.

 

The committee agreed to purchase a shot clock now rather than later due to increasing prices.  

 

The Board was informed of a $3,000 Ship Grant that is available to schools if applied and approved.  Brenda Pohlman would be the contact person.  Gary will look into this.  

 

HVED: Diane provided information regarding the SE Explorers Camp that will be held June 13-17. 

 

Principal Report:

  •  Fillmore County presented to M-C 5-12th grade students on internet safety.  Thank you to Fillmore County!
  • Mrs. Hollar is working with Brenda Pohlman on arranging a safe driving day and bike safety day with the AAA Grant we received.  Thank you to AAA and Brenda!
  • MCA testing is still going on.
  • VIP day is scheduled for next Thursday, April 28th at 1:30.
  • The school will be having a garage sale in the gym this Saturday 8:30-1:00 to clear out unused items prior to construction.
  • The seniors returned from their trip and it sounds like they all enjoyed their time.  Thank you to Doug Wyffels for coordinating the trip.  
 

Superintendent Report:  

  • Due to construction, the school will not be accessible starting June 6th beyond the main office/HS gym.  
  • Gary gave an update on the Summer construction plan.
  • The playground company is planning to start installation tomorrow.
  • Gary updated the Board on the Redefining Ready report card progress and discussions that are being had at meetings on what we can do to prepare our students to be career and college ready.  
  • Board Members Tollefsrud and Weidemann have volunteered to present diplomas at graduation.  Lisa will check with Adkins to see if she is available to help.  If not, Miller and Wilder offered to step in if needed. 
 

Enrollment was reviewed.

 

Items for Action and/or Discussion:

  1.  Motion by Wilder, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the proposal for 2022-23 all day M,W,F 4K Preschool.  
  2. Motion by Marquardt, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the second reading of policies 410, 413, 414, 415, 506, 514, 522, 524, 616, 806, 208.
  3. Discussion was held on creating a part time Dean of Students position to assist the Principal with daily Administrative/leadership tasks.  Will look into further and bring back next month.     
  4. HVED is looking into hiring an outside organization to do an organizational analysis to be done next Fall.       
  5. No change to the current Return to School Plan.
  6. Motion by Livingood, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve Amy Hoscheit’s FTE reduction from 1.0 to .85 for the 2022-23 school year.
