National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

These four main purposes outlined in the NHS constitution have guided chapters from the beginning: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.” These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.

Students with a 3.5 cumulative average or above will be invited to apply for membership during their junior and senior year. The criteria and general procedures used in their local selection processes are published on the Mabel-Canton website. Final selection is made by a vote of the five-member (minimum) Faculty Council, a selection committee appointed by the principal. The NHS advisers attend the selection process and maintains copies of the local procedures, but are non-voting members.

Once selected, the students are awarded the opportunity of membership in the Mabel-Canton chapter at a special induction ceremony. With induction, the individuals assume certain obligations as outlined by the chapter and the national constitution. In accordance, the Mabel-Canton Chapter conducts at least two service projects for the school or community.

Due to the prestige and standards attached to acceptance into the organization, violations within school, as well as in the community, will result in dismissal from National Honor Society. These are listed within the candidate forms filled out and signed by the student. This ensures that all candidates are aware of the caliber of character and behavior required for acceptance and continuing membership in National Honor Society.
